Nipopo (ニポポ) – Ainu Folk Carving
29.5cm
A beautifully carved wooden Nipopo, a traditional folk figure originating from the culture of the Ainu people of northern Japan. The name Nipopo is commonly interpreted as “little wooden child” or “wooden doll,” reflecting its role as a protective household talisman.
This example features a striking geometric face carved directly into the wood, emphasizing the natural grain and craftsmanship rather than painted decoration. The minimalist design and strong sculptural form create a powerful presence while maintaining the quiet simplicity associated with traditional northern folk art.
Traditionally displayed as a symbol of protection, health, and good fortune, Nipopo figures remain highly appreciated by collectors of Japanese crafts
