Spain applies the same EU import rules as every other member state, so the tax itself holds no surprises. What varies locally is the collection mechanics: whoever clears the parcel, Correos or a private courier, adds their own fee on top of the tax.
There is no tax-free allowance
The EU abolished the old €22 exemption in July 2021. Spanish IVA applies from the first euro of declared value. Customs duty is a separate charge and only starts above €150, so most modest purchases attract IVA alone.

Correos and the couriers each charge a clearance handling fee for advancing the tax on your behalf. Correos is the cheaper of the two; a courier's fee is typically several times higher. It is charged whether or not any duty is actually owed, which is why it weighs most on small parcels.
Declared value includes the shipping you paid
Spanish customs assess IVA on the item price plus international shipping, not the item alone. A modest item sent by express can attract a noticeably larger bill than the same item sent economy.
