Singapore is the cheapest and fastest destination on this list, and the least likely to produce a customs surprise — there is no import duty on ordinary consumer goods at all. The one thing worth understanding is that the GST rules changed, and most guides still describe the old ones.
Low-value goods are no longer GST-free
Since January 2023 Singapore has charged GST on low-value goods imported by air and post, collected under the Overseas Vendor Registration regime rather than at the border. The widely repeated rule that anything under S$400 arrives untaxed no longer holds.
Duty applies to almost nothing
Singapore levies customs duty on four categories only: liquor, tobacco, motor vehicles and petroleum products. Everything a proxy shopper normally buys from Japan — clothing, collectibles, cameras, records, games — is duty-free. Only GST applies.
It is a short, reliable lane
